Saturday Morning was the regional cross country meet and and while I was at the bottom of the pack, I still PR'd, coming in at 38:39, shaving nearly a minute off of a road 10K I did on 10/19. Assuming I don't get a wild hair and go to grad school and run XC then this was the end of my college running career.
It may be 'cross season, but I'm still getting my run on. Riding a bike is great and all, but there is something about flying over the ground on two feet that just feels so natural. Oh, and there is a 5k I want to hit hard this coming weekend.
Dedicated, driven and damn fast, Fiona Oakes is a tremendous inspiration. A former Olympic cyclist, Fiona now runs an animal sanctuary in the U.K. and competes as an elite marathoner. Having cared for a number of abused or abandoned animals as kid, I can't imagine caring for 260 animals, let alone going out for a training run everyday. I can barely stay in shape just taking care of myself. So I wanted to find out how Fiona does it, so I asked her...
Bradley Saul: How did you get into competitive running?
George French: As a young boy, I started as a long-distance hiker at the Thacher School, Ojai, CA. This was an outdoors- oriented boarding school where everyone had his horse, but I was first boy in the school NOT to have a horse. The only way the headmaster would admit me was with the condition that I would hike or bike literally EVERYWHERE the horses went.
