What: Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary will hold its 9th Annual 5K Run for the Animals! and 1-Mile Fun Walk. Approximately 700 area individuals and team members will compete for money, prizes, and raffle items. Delicious (all-vegan) refreshments will be provided. Adults and children are welcome; dogs are welcome to join the walk. Stephanie Dignan, aka The Boot Camp Girl, will warm up runners and walkers. Lisa Berigan of BIG 100.3 (WBIG-FM) will serve as master of ceremonies.

Who: Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary is a 400-acre, nonprofit refuge for more than 200 neglected, unwanted, or abandoned farm animals. Its mission is to provide care, rehabilitation, and permanent sanctuary for unwanted farm animals; protect habitat for wildlife; and educate the public (especially children and school groups) about farm-animal and wildlife issues. All proceeds from the event will benefit the sanctuary.

Details: This year’s race will be Green (our efforts are detailed at http://www.animalsanctuary.org/events/green.htm) and runners will use timing chips to verify their performance. Runners may also bring their old shoes for donation to Nike's Reuse-A-Shoe program, which recycles worn-out athletic shoes into a material used to create athletic and playground surfaces.

Cost: Registration fee is $25.00 for the Run/Walk until April 22, 2012. Beginning April 23, the registration fee is $28.00; on race day, the fee is $30.00. Donations to the sanctuary in lieu of attending the event are always appreciated at http://www.animalsanctuary.org.
