OA Vic Bike Team Leaves Strong Impression at Bastion Square Crit

Congrats to OA Victoria's racers, who all finished well in each of their events on Sunday! The Times Colonist Bastion Square Criterium is the biggest road race on the island, and typically one of the biggest in BC, and marks the closure of the road season here this year. The course is in downtown Victoria, a four-corner road course around the popular Bastion Square market.

Kevin Park was the first racer up, in the mixed-level Category 5 field, which was the 2nd largest of the weekend with 26 starters. Kevin played an active role in the 25 laps of racing, with a strong effort in the remaining laps in an effort to break up the pack, but it was incredibly tenacious and stuck together for a massive bunch sprint, in which Kevin edged through, including a few bumps with a rider in front, for 4th! OA member Casey Ryder was also in this race, but rumour has it he focused a bit too much on 'fun' in prior evenings, and was not at all in top form, but finished mid-pack. ;)

In the Cat4 race, Dave "What - I Hardly Do Road Races!" Shishkoff was a continual presence at the front of the pack of 12 racers - leading out for the first few laps, then sitting in waiting for a good moment to pounce. Unfortunately, the pack stuck together, and Dave wasn't feeling much like a solo TT effort, and so stuck it out for the bunch sprint. Hoping to whip through on the inside of the final corner, he found everyone else there, and so went wide, and powered by much of the sprinting field on the outside to collect 3rd - a podium spot! Having not done any high-speed racing for over three weeks due to the closure of the velodrome eroded Dave's confidence, who in retrospect should have jumped 150m earlier, and would have easily outsprinted the field once in front... Reminder of today's lesson: you must believe in yourself!! Regardless, despite typing this in the third person, Dave is very happy with his performance, and will likely move up to Cat3.

In the Cat3 race, Emile DeRosnay was an obvious standout in the 12 starters, and won almost all the Primes (and often by a large gap!) True to form, with four laps (or kilometers) to go, Emile carried through from a Prime sprint and gained nearly an entire block of ground as he pursuited to the finish, and remained ahead of the charging pack to win the race!! Emile was ecstatic to finally win a road race in BC, and will likely be moving up to Cat2.

Gillian Carleton rode a conservative race in the Women's 1/2/3 race, with a disappointing seven starters, although that didn't mean the competition wasn't significant, with international track star Steph Roorda and Canadian MTB sensation Alison Sydor in the field. Gillian demonstrated her tremendous strenghts a few times, going for a few Primes, but would fall back into the pack afterwards...until the final Prime with two laps remaining, when in response to screaming teammates and crowds, she carried the momentum from the Prime win through, and powered away like the future superstar she's going to be, and took the win in style!!!

Photo from the line here: http://duanebc.smugmug.com/gallery/6030043_Svs3Y#377453995_GHKQt

Gillian will be missed after this event, as she's been offered a fantastic opportunity with Total Restoration, and doubtless she'll continue to excel and dominate in whatever races she takes up with the aid of coaching and teammates. All the best to you Gillian, thanks for choosing to race for OA in 2008!! =)

This marks the end of the road season, and the beginning of 'cyclocross!

A listing of many of OA Vic's rider's accomplishments can be found here:

Thanks for tuning in!

TrackFest #2 Results and Recent Racing Updates

Hey all y'all!

An update from this weekend of racing! The second and final TrackFest was this weekend here in Victoria, BC, and out little club did very well!

Evan in the 'C' category unfortunately had only one competitor in the Omnium, and none in the Bunch Races, so he did no worse than 2nd in any event! =) Thrown in with the 'B' racers, he did amazingly well, remaining in contact with the bunch for almost all the races! He's inspired, and looking forward to a solid winter of training, and joining the B's full-on for next year.

Gillian came for Sunday's races, but was pretty pooched from winning the Provincial TT Championship, and also coming within 14 seconds of Olympic TTer Alex Wrubleski in the local TT course last week. Still, she put in some great efforts in the Keirin and other bunch races, including a top Women's finish in the Points Race.

In the A's, we had Emile and myself representing. Emile was a bit more focused on the Omnium, and i had the Madison in my sights. At the end of the day, Emile finished 4th, 2pts short of 3rd, and i in 9th (out of 16). In the Bunch Races, Emile finished 7th, mainly due to poor Keirin results. He finished 3rd in the final Points race. I finished one up from the bottom in 15th, and only entered the Keirins -- finished 3rd in both my heats, but only two went through each time. Still, in the first one, i hit a season high speed of 63kph! Hoy only hit 69 at the Olympics. ;)

Being the second and final event of TrackFest, Series Champions were also revealed! Evan, of course, came out on top in the Bunch Races and Omnium in the 'C' field! In the women's field, Laura Brown, who doesn't race for OA, took the title, but she's an OA Vic member! In the Omnium A's, we were happy to see Emile as the Series Champ!! I was also crowned one of the series Champions in the Madison series, tied with the second most points over the series.

OA Vic sponsored one of the events, the OrganicAthlete Omnium, and part of the arrangement was to have special Series Champion jerseys produced, with the OA logo and name on them, you can check out the design here:

http://www.gvva.bc.ca/events/2008-trackfest2/trackfest-jersey.pdf

These were awarded to the top 'A' finishers, so both Emile and i will be sporting these on occasion. A real honor!

The nitty-gritty details of TF#2 can be found here:

http://www.gvva.bc.ca/events/2008-trackfest2/

OA continues to shine here in Victoria! In the local racing leagues, i'm still sitting in 1st overall in the Track League, with Emile chasing me in 2nd. In the local Road League, i'm still sitting in 2nd overall, but Emile will likely overtake my position in the TT this week. He's also set the fourth fastest overall TT time!

OA Vic plans to keep things rolling, with Track Nationals coming up in a few weeks, another big weekend of road and track racing in mid-September, and then onto Cyclocross season!

- Dave

BC Provincial Track Championships - Day 1 & 2

Provincials is going quite well, i've gotten two medals!

First was Friday, got a Bronze in the Madison, which was an 'open' event. I choose one of the two Elite Women riders as my partner, so cool that we finished well. There were something like 8 teams.

Second was Sat, somehow i got another Bronze in the Keirin!!! Sooo close to silver, but got pipped at the line...

Also got third in the Madison Tournament with Rachel, earned us $20..haha

Finished 4th in the Pursuit, rode a 5'31 in the Qualifier, and 5'37 today....legs were CRAP first thing..bleh. Missed out on a medal, but not surprised with the time, since i've been training sprints the last month and a half and not endurance...guess that might explain the Keirin..hehe

Also finished 5th in the Scratch, was in a crummy position when the sprint went. Same in the Points race, missed 'the break', and three of us chased the entire race! Three off the front held it, remarkably. We kept getting upwards of a 1/4 lap, but couldn't close it...hard freaking race, just going like that.... Bob, who's a strong rider, beat me in the Pursuit, pretty much cracked...could barely pull half laps..Glenn and i pulled full laps most of it. I was surprised i didn't blow either..harsh..

OA did very well overall! Gill won the Elite Women's pursuit, and has been riding strong in the bunch races, this being her first time. Emile has been doing very well, he took gold in the Pursuit, riding a 5'08 (twice!), and got Silver in the Points. Nice!

In the Citizen field, Kevin and Jan rode well, Jan was starting to win events, but then had an awful crash, and was taken out with a broken clavicle. =(

First crash i've seen on the track this year...hopefully he's not off the bike too long!

Omnium tomorrow..eeep! Will be going for it one last time....i'm pretty beat, but so have got to be the other riders..

Not Another Track Report! 2nd & 4th, x2!

Four OA racers at the track tonite for the 'Epic Points Race'! Two in A, and two in B.

Emile and i roll out in a pack of 11, and it starts off rather slow, and remains much that way until the first sprint. Bob Cameron, our main 'threat' is off like a rocket, Emile is on him, and i blow through the field to get the 4th point. I keep the pace up through the sprint in order to try and drop a few people.

We basically repeat this. About mid-way, Emile does a fantastic pull, about two full laps, and shells a few stragglers, leaving Bob, and Chris A in the lead pack. Chris proves to be a real pain, doing absolutely no work in the group... I try a few time to attack and gap him, but since he's been doing nothing but pipping me at the line for the sprints, he's too fresh and strong. Next time Emile and i will have to double-team him with a more focused effort. We've given up trying to drop Bob, but at least he keeps things rolling.

That's pretty much the race, we lap the other three finishers 2, 3 and 4 times. Emile takes second and i in 4th. We need to work on dropping the slacker more......

In the B event, Marty and our latest rider, Jan, were in for some good looking action! I wasn't able to watch, doing an interview with the paper about the upcoming Provincial Championships next weekend, but the race was tight, and i caught Jan on an impressive solo break for several laps (collecting a sprint win) and the final sprint was a clincher, speedy Roland was away off the front for the final kilo, but in the last lap Jan bridged up with Marty in hot pursuit, who then came around and took the final sprint. Final results saw Jan in 2nd and Marty in 4th. That's for VCL (Vic Cycling League) points, since Roland is an A rider, Jan got 1st and Marty 3rd for GVVA scoring - nice work guys!!

Will be keeping a low profile for the next week, hoping to finally score a Provincial medal!!! The Team should do well, but it'd be nice to land one myself for once. ;)

Caleb Pike, Finding my Rhythm

So I went out to Caleb Pike tonight in hopes of getting at least a few VCL
points. Unfortunately I was the only one out there in green which is too bad
because it was a nice night for racing and was really looking forward to
some teamwork. Despite taking over a week off due to a little mishap
involving a ladder, a cement floor, and my right leg I was feeling
surprisingly strong on a short test ride the other day and quite fresh on
the way out to Caleb Pike. The warmup was fairly hard with increasing
intensity, as I'm learning this is the key to me feeling strong during the
race.

Both A and B groups were quite large tonight, possibly the biggest bunch so
far this year. After 2 warmup laps and several trips into the bushes I lined
up and chatted with a few other riders about the course/race. The B's were
racing a meager 11 laps tonight and the A's were doing a few more as usual.

Off we went and the pace was dreadfully slow for the first 2 laps. I settled
into my rhythm and placed myself within the front 7 riders or so over the
next few laps. I'm beginning to feel a pack awareness and starting to feel
much smoother and calmer than in previous races. There were a few big surges
but nothing too serious and I was able to keep on a wheel quite easily. Lap
4 or so I decided to go to the front and up the pace a little but nothing
came of it and I settled back into the draft and let some other go-getters
do the work. On either lap 5 or 6 a deer jumped out right of the bushes and
into the race lane on a decent and it scattered the pack a little. The
front riders took advantage of this and powered to the bottom of the hill
and up the short climb, and I was one of the few hanging with. There was a
small gap but by the time we reached the top of the climb and began the next
lap the group was completely back together with only 2 or 3 riders that had
been dropped. I continued to hold my position and fought my way from the
inside to the outside just before a sharp corner, which worked well because
it placed me on the outside line right before the climb which is where I
like to be. You don't get jammed off into the dirt and there is usually
ample room to pass a few riders on the outside without a yellow line
violation. That is exactly what I did but had the strong and light Megan
Rathwell on my wheel and Steve Lund to her wheel. Suddenly I felt like I was
riding through sand and slowed significantly, all the while frustrating
Megan and Steve who couldn't make it around until I realized I had flatted
and pulled off. DARN!!! Well not the actual word I used but I'm sure you get
the idea.

I rolled over the top and down the hill nearly losing my bike from under me
as my rear tire folded and skidded out the back end.
I knew my race was over but I desperately wanted to hop back in for the
final few laps. I quickly changed the tube and accelerated back into the
main pack on the start of lap 9. Immediately I noticed that the group had
slowed quite a bit compared to previous laps. Maybe it was just that I had
rested for a lap but I'm sure they were tiring some. Despite my fresh(ish)
legs I decided to just sit in the middle and not bother doing anything that
might influence the outcome of the race, not that it really mattered. We
came to the bell lap and the pace quickened but nobody was willing to do
much until the final decent and hill sprint finish. I hammered down the
climb passing 5 or so riders and partook in the bunch sprint, was passed by
a rider and passed another, and finished side by side with another that came
up from behind and held the same pace for the final few meters. My sprint up
that hill is getting better but still needs work. I'm sure that if I had
been more aggressive on the bell lap and worked to the front I would have
finished within top 5.

The flat couldn't have come at a worse time but I'm not overly disappointed
and still glad that I jumped back in for the final few. Next time will be
very interesting I'm sure, especially if some teammates come out. My ride
home was fast and I was feeling crazy strong as usual AFTER the race. I've
decided that if I'm not exhausted after the next race then I didn't work
hard enough in it. I'll also be warming up even harder until I find the
sweet spot(for Caleb Pike at least).

Anyways that is all. It's mango time! It took me an hour to write the report
as I've been pausing to pig out.
One more quick note... I shaved my head last night, which I heard is good
for at least 10 more watts...can anyone confirm this? heh. I probably lost
at least a pound of hair =P

Take care all!

Kev

Dave Needs to Learn Control to Pursuit Properly

It was pursuit night last Monday at the track, i had it all planned out for myself -- get up to and hold 43kph. That's all i had to do, and i'd get a solid time. This was after careful consideration of the weather conditions and my fitness. That would get me a time in the mid 5:30's, which would be fine for this time of the year.

Did i listen to myself? Nope.

I started off, and by the time i sat, i saw i was going 45kph.

No prob, i thought, i just kept my legs spinning, no pressure.

A lap later, still at 45kph, and it's feeling very easy. I begin to question my original assessment, since i'm holding 45kph without any effort.

A couple laps later (out of 12, it's a 4km effort) i'm still holding it, though it's starting to be work...

By lap 6, it's becoming a major drain to hold, and i start sinking... A couple laps later i'm down to 42..another lap, i'm barely holding 41kph....bleh.

I dig deep and pick it up a bit more, i'm breathing hard and my legs are strained, and try to keep it above 40kph..harsh!

I finish with a 5:43. Crap.

This was exactly what i did at the Provincial track championships last year, and spoiled a perfectly good opportunity to get a PB.

Ahh well, hopefully my lesson is learned THIS TIME!! =)

Emile put in a really solid effort, finishing with a 5'27.

There's a Points race on Thursday, then off to Burnaby for some serious track racing, with Emile as my Madison partner, should be a hoot!

Weekly Track Race Report - Team Tactics Starting to Take Effect!

Hey all, here's our Thursday night report! We had three in the A field, with Emile, Marty and myself. Marty wasn't feeling too peppy, so volunteered to work for us, and Emile and i agreed to defend whomever was off the front.

First up was a 36 lap (12km) Scratch race. We sat in the first half, nothing exciting occurred, there was a big bunch (11 riders), so it was mainly sticking together. It was at that point that i realized that i was feeling good, and several riders were looking a bit tired..and i remembered that i need to be attacking -- i need to practice attacking more and more! So WHAM, i'm off. Pull a lap at high speed, bust up the pack a bit...off the front i fall back into 4th position, and at the front i keep the speed up again...but after another lap or two, it all slows down...so i attack again! I repeat a few more times, until with 7 laps to go, Emile blasts away from the group. Two people in front of me at the front, and a lap later when i'm at the front, i cruise.... Emile gets a full quarter lap away - woot! Marty and i are now committed to defending!

Chad at that points tries to sprint by. I accelerate, and am on his wheel. He pulls a fast lap, then i'm at the front again, and ease up the pace......i pull up and off the front. The pace increases...another rider attacks out of the pack -- i'm on his wheel. When he pulls off, once more, i slow it down. The pack is getting closer, and just couple laps remain. One lap to go, i'm back on the front, holding the pack back for Emile........ Chris A attacks!! I jump on his wheel through corner 1 & 2, at corner 4 i pump it out! We're quickly gaining on Emile, but he gets to the line with a few meters to spare. I surge past Chris for 2nd, woot!!! An OA 1-2 Punch!!!!

Next race is a 20 Lap Snowball. In this race, each lap is worth points - specifically the number of the lap. So the 1st lap is 1pt, 5th lap is 5pts, final lap 20pts. Rider with the most points at the end wins.

First lap, we let a Roland dangle off the front. Marty then charges up and take lap 2. I then overtake Marty. Come the line, i get nipped by Chad - frack! I remain on the front, and again, Chad nips me! I'm trying to conserve, so i pull off the front, and Chad goes unchallenged for another two laps... I get my revenge, and nab him for the 7th. HA! I pull up, and let Emile go for a sprint, and he easily gets lap 8. A rider at that point attacks, but Marty jumps in, catching him at the line! Marty holds it for another lap, collecting 10pts there. Unfortunately, it was a bit much for him, and he ended up getting lapped, but he did an awesome job defending the team and taking points away from other riders.

My nemisis from last year, Mike Cooper, then overtook the front for the 11th sprint. Not to be outdone, i nab 12th. Chris A, who's been sitting in BOTH races taking zero pulls, charges away for number 13, but Emile is on his wheel, and blasts past!! Emile gets away and collects 14 & 15. I'm trying to defend at this point, but while i was at the back of the pack, Marcus charged away from the chase group, and catches Emile and nabs the 16th sprint. Emile retaliates, and gets #17 and #18, solidifying his victory. Two laps remaining, Chris A blasts away, once more when i'm a bit back in the pack - frack!! The chase isn't too motivated, Chris easily nabs #19, far from the pack. We continue to chase, and with a half lap to go, i power away! I clear the riders, and am bearing down on Chris A. 30 meters remain, and i'm just about to pass him, before the line, when a black and red rider flashes by a good 10kph faster than me (!!) -- Mike Cooper once again tears away my victory!!! That would have put me in 2nd once more, but i ended up with 4th. GRRR!! At least Emile got the victory!!

Overall, of the 20 sprints, OA collected the points from half of them. Kick ass. =)

In the overall points, Emile is on the front in 1st with 53pts. Chris A has 2nd place with 50pts, and i'm in third with 39pts, 9pts ahead of the next rider (Chad.) In the team competition, OA is totally dominating. My form is starting to take shape, and hopefully i'll surpass Chris in the next month or so. Marty, with his solid Keirin action, is tied for 6th, and currently one point away from 5th. Old man Dave Mercer will be tough to overcome tho...

Next Thursday is our Epic Points Race, Emile and i will doubtless bust up the pack, and will try to lap the field.

G'nite all!

- Dave

Injuries and Disappointment at Gutbuster1

I arrived at the beautiful and historic Royal Roads University early, well slept and carbed up.

Decked out in OA green from head to toe. After a 15 min warmup my persistent old ankle injury was really bothering me and I was noticing a slight twinge of pain going down along the outside of my foot. I had Cara Obee kindly tape it up for a small donation to Doctors Without Borders. It felt quite stable after but I still had
my concerns. Nearly 12k of climbs and descents lay ahead.

The race started and I was in good form. My cardio is stronger than it has ever been. After about 2km I was within the front 15-20 of racers in a field of 150. Still being conservative because of my ankle I could have been further up. Every time we hit a steep climb I could easily pass a few people before the top. Most were walking and I had good power to charge right up past them. The intense jarring on the descents was causing an intolerable amount of pain and discomfort in my foot/ankle. I'll jump ahead to about 4K. My foot was in so much pain I had to walk. I had lost a lot of positions from having to stop but I still wanted to finish the race. I made one last desperate attempt at running but it just wasn't going to happen. The pain was unbearable. I had to drop out of the race. Luckily the course was looping back quite close to the start/finish area and I was able to hop off the trail there rather than having to struggle through several kilometers just to get back.

With my head held low I hobbled back to the start finish area and informed the officials of my DNF.
The 5K(shortcourse) racers were just finishing. As disappointed as I was I knew that I had made the
right choice by deciding not to continue.

Sigh... It feels like I might have a stress fracture in my foot or some sort of nasty stuff in my ankle.
It just hasn't healed well enough to take the abuse of a Gutbuster. I'm heading to the emergency for an
X-RAY. I hate hospitals and am not a fan of the standard medical system but I have little choice in
this matter. I have to know what is going on in there and why it isn't healing properly. I'll be back into weekly physiotherapy, acupuncture and spend a little money on proper injury rehabilitation instead of tackling it myself this time. I likely wont be running much until the next Gutbuster which is a over a month away. I *might* do the 5 K if everything checks out okay and I get the go ahead from the experts. If not then I won't be
too upset. Healing is more important than racing. I will likely continue with bike racing and training as I
know that I can do it without much stress to the injured areas. Care will be taken to brace my ankle and not cause it any undue stress.

I'm sorry for a disappointing report. I was hoping to post up about a wonderful race and a top 10
finish. I'm finally starting to have feelings about giving up running for many years. It's sad because
it was my main passion in life for a few years, and I credit running for igniting my passion for fitness, health, and helping my find my way towards veganism and the Organic Athlete Organization.

I've never DNF'd in a run before so this is a very sad day for me. A few tears were shed, both from physical pain and mental disappointment. You guys are so supportive and encouraging that I know I will be able to persevere through this and maybe it will be a good thing for me and help direct my focus more towards improving my cycling abilities.

Peace out

Kev

Second RR - Caleb Pike part deux

Here's a quick summary of the local weekly road race:

=====

Hey gang, quick race report! Caleb Pike again, the 'Hilly Circuit' course here, it was cool but sunny, and we had 3 peeps out.

Tonite was Emile's first official race in the OA kit - he looked sharp! He joined me in the A's. It was only 12 laps (last Sunday was a leg-busting 25), which was nice. (~50mins) Emile sat near the front the entire time, ready to respond to any attacks. It felt a fair bit more relaxed tonite than last Sunday, and the 20 or so of us mainly kept it together. About 6 laps to go, a break went off the front, and Emile was in there. I was in the chase group, and we were down to about 16 riders total, half in each pack. They stayed away for a while, but it didn't seem like they wanted to keep away, and it only lasted a few laps.

I hung in much better than last Sun, i remained pretty near Emile most of the time, but just after we caught up, i got shelled a bit in the corner...everyone slows up too much and then charges out of the corner, and i've not trained my 'response' yet so i was getting a bit weary, and eventually fell back about 3 to go, but managed to keep the pack in sight until the last part of the final lap, which was a big improvement for me. I finished 15th, don't think anyone was behind me. I think in the summer i may actually be able to do fairly well on this course.....once i've got my anaerobic skillz back at least.

Emile's diligence at the front paid out in the end, and he collected 3rd place in the brutal uphill sprint - woohoo!! The standings should show us both in the Top 10 in the A's, overall (with my 6th from Sunday).

In the B's, Kevin was on his own, but held in well to pack that just wouldn't break up, and in the massive (~20 peeps) bunch sprint at the end came in 10th. Good to collect that final point! =)

I don't know if anyone is racing next Wed (awful hilly crit), but Thur is the first Track race of the week, and i'm really looking forward to racing on a FLAT course! I predict Emile and myself to be in the Top 3, and Marty near the top for the B's, and if Kevin comes out, should place well as well. We've been learnin' him how to go fast on the flats. ;)

Dave Noisy Out! =)

First Race of the Year, Caleb Pike, Hilly RR

Full details posted on my blog:

http://cycling.thenoisies.com/2008/03/first-race-of-year-caleb-pike.asp

In brief:

There are photos as well, we're definitely the most sharp looking riders out there!

Congrats to Kevin who finished 8th in the larger B group (~20 starters) in
his first time on the course, and Marty who finished 11th in his first RR in
several years! I finished 6th in the A's, but it's really not that
impressive, as that's out of six. Nine started, but three DNF'd..haha..
Still, that'll keep my name fairly high in the local league rankings for a
while, esp. once we get on the track as well. ;)

"Official" results of the Victoria Cycling League here:

Track & Trail Duathlon

Start: 05/17/2008 - 11:00

End: 05/17/2008 - 18:00

The OrganicAthlete Victoria Track & Trail Duathlon is an Omnium-style duathlon, held in the Velodrome at the Juan de Fuca Recreation Center, with four events:

* 333m time trail
* 333m run
* 4km Pursuit
* 5km Trail Run

The goal is to get the best possible times in each event, to win the overall Omnium. There is no 'transition' between each event, as racers run/ride individually, with the exception of the final trail run, which will be a bunch event.

There are three categories of competition: Junior(18-under), Senior(under 30) and Master(over 30), and for each there is an Open category, and Women's.

Plenty of draw prizes will be given out, medals and ribbons for the Top 5 in each category, and free organic and vegan food and refreshments for all.

Hope to see you out there!
