What do OrganicAthletes Eat?

I’m often fascinated how people can look at the same thing and all walk away with different stories. Over the years, I’ve heard lots of perceptions about what OrganicAthlete is.  I’ve heard from non-vegans that they don’t want to be involved because the organization is too vegan. They see us as exclusionary.

OrganicAthlete Diets
The diet of OrganicAthlete members.  59% of OrganicAthlete members have voluntarily selected a diet preference when they register.  Claiming a diet is not required to join OrganicAthlete
I’ve heard from members who have friends who won’t support OrganicAthlete because the organization is too raw, as if a raw vegan message is antithetical to a vegan message.  I’ve heard through the grapevine that some people feel OrganicAthlete is not vegan enough, implying that if a vegan agenda isn’t pushed front and center then we’re not serving the movement.

I like hearing all the different perceptions. The fact is that OrganicAthlete can’t mean everything to everyone, nor should it. OrganicAthlete’s core message is and always has been: eat more organic fruits and vegetables and eat less animal foods (none is best!). It’s that simple.

Do we support organic? Yes. Do we support vegan? Yes. Do we support raw foods? Yes. Is it necessary that people in the organization be into any one of things 100%?  No.

Our membership is open to anyone willing to explore a compassionate lifestyle.  If you’re looking for raw egg protein recovery shake recipes, you’re not going to find them here. If you’re looking for a running, cycling, or triathlon club to get a hamburger after your race with, you probably want to search elsewhere. If you do want a group of non-judgemental people willing to share their experiences and support you on your journey towards a compassionate, athletic lifestyle, then join us.  We’re looking forward to having you on the team!

I love the fact that I'm not judged for the way I eat my vegan meals. My experience with OrganicAthlete has always been very supportive especially in my transition period from vegetarian to vegan a couple of years ago. No one said you have to do it this way or that way, when I asked for helped or suggestions there was great support and lots of help to keep me on track. I also love that OrganicAthlete supports all levels of athletic abilities and helps you with your healthy journey.

Thank you OrganicAthlete you have helped mold my new world and for that I'm grateful!

You Rock,

Jane Kurtz

It's funny how much passion eating and dietary habits generate - right up there with religion and politics. As if there were only one "right" way to eat. I'm a firm believer of to each his own. We all have unique dietary, nutritional and, sometimes, medical needs. I won't lecture anyone on their diet and I expect the same courtesy!

I have always believed the same thing. I do what I do and if someone wants to join me I am happy to share answers or reasons, but I don't push the ideology on anyone. I have raised my daughter with the same outlook as kids at school can be cruel when it comes to something different or new to them. She stands her ground and brings her garbanzo spread pita sandwiches to school for lunch. Despite the odd reactions from her classmates she has found one that asked to share her lunch and try the foods that my daughter liked. The two of them are now the best of friends and together they are better able to set an example for the other kids. Frtios and Bologna do not have the be the "norm". The key though, is not threatening anyone else even when they are feelin insecure about how you eat, but rather to invite them to share. It's amazing what you can learn from kids on the playground!

Finally an organization stands up for the "other people". I try very hard to eat a "vegan diet", not because my main priority is animal rights, but because of the heath benefits of such a diet. I do eat animal products, but it is usually because the party, dinner, etc. does not have available vegan choices. It is very disheartining to hear vegetarians and vegans trash people who do eat animal products. You can be too passionate about issues and end up sounding like an extremist. I have found the way to help people understand is through me living my life, not adhering some crazy views. That is reason I will not support an organization like Peta. I like Organic Athlete and based on this "mission statement", I will provide more support in the future. Labels are what is hurting the vegetarian / vegan cause.

I think the best part of OrganicAthlete are its members and it is them that empower others by example to try something new. Eating healthier was my own personal decision and I totally believe it is the only way it works long term, it has to come from your own resolve and not because anyone else says so. But I do wish OA existed back then because learning what works from others is priceless. It's not about peer pressure here but about inspiration and mutual support.
