Pine Flat Race Report

02/17/2008 - 09:45

Course: 62 miles. The course starts out with a 20 mile out-and-back along Pine Flat resevoir. This is mostly gentle rollers -- nothing too exciting. A non-technical 5 mile downhill section is followed by about 25 miles of flat straight road through farmland. On this 25 mile stretch there are exactly 2 bumps, each about 100 meters long. Finally, after two righ-hand turns, the fun starts. First a steppy 3-4 mile climb at about 6%, then a 3-4 mile mostly downhill with a few rollers, and finally, a 1 kilometer steep (maxes out around 15%) finish. Of course, since it's a point to point race, you need to ride 8 miles back to the start line. Not always a fun experience, but you get to work your legs out.
Our races started at 7:55 and 8:00 am respectively. It was cold, but sunny; over the duration of the race both the wind and the temperature picked up.

Jeff finished 6th. The first 50 miles had a bunch of surges and wet attacks. At some point, two guys got off the front and stayed away. At the climb, the field shattered. Jeff worked with two guys up the first climb. He was in a group of 5 at the 1k to go sign and finished second in the mini-group sprint. Mara Abbott and Kim Anderson from Team High Road raced in the M35+ and Jeff finished just behind Mara and just ahead of Kim for a Team- High Road/Vegan sandwich.

Cara finished 1st. This was a pretty uneventful race. Some of the highlights included seeing a woodpecker and riding through a heard of cows. The cows knew not to be afraid of me, since I am Team Vegan! Originally Team High Road was enrolled in our race, but went out with the M35+. We asked if we could do the same, because it was a small field, but since we hadn't been given numbers in that series, the race officials said "No!" So there it was. Six women. We spent the first 50 miles rotating in pairs. As soon as we turned for the climb I picked up the pace. Velo Bella fell off the back. Touchstone, Proman, Metromint and I were cruising up the climb. I would give little surges periodically to test my legs a bit. During one of these, Metromint fell off. Over the penultimate 4 miles, the three of us who remained rotated through the rollers. With 1k to go I just sat back and decided to watch. Proman jumped. I sat on her wheel. With 500m to go I jumped pretty hard and rode away up to the line. Done.
