www.organicathlete.org Pro Athletes and Olympic Hopefuls Choose Plant-Based Diets Vegetarian athletes are sometimes seen as the exception in a society where meat and dairy are considered necessary for strength and muscle. But one group of elite athletes is out to change those perceptions. OrganicAthlete’s new “Pro-Activist” team brings together elite and professional athletes from a variety of sports who consume no animal products in their quest for optimal performance. This is the first effort ever by a group of pro athletes to use their sport as a means of expressing their commitment to a compassionate lifestyle and plant-based diet. The team, which includes some Olympic hopefuls, sets out to demonstrate that a vegan diet is not only possible, but the exceptional diet for health and performance. They're using their collective voice to champion the benefits of a healthy plant-based diet for athletes of all ages and abilities. The team includes: Brendan Brazier (28), a professional triathlete from British Columbia and winner of the 2003 Canadian 50km Ultramarathon Championships; Robert Cheeke (24), an elite bodybuilder and founder of veganbodybuilder.com; Mike Cline (28), a 2006 Winter Olympics hopeful in the sport of skeleton; and Tonya Kay (27), a professional dancer and former member of the STOMP tour. The group also includes 3 professional cyclists: Adam Hodges Myerson (32), a vegetarian for 15 years with 38 career victories; Jason Sager (28), a pro mountain biker and former off-road duathlon national champion; and Christine Vardaros (34), an accomplished pro mountain bike and road racer and a top ten finisher in World Cup Cyclo-cross events.
