Ironman Wisconsin

Media

Finally my first OA blog! My first big race as an OA member went well. A little over one year since I became vegan I finished my first Ironman! I met one OA member just before the start and a few other vegans during the race. I was amazed by all of the positive support I received from vegan fans in Madison. The OA uniform really stands out and I'm proud to wear it. Keep up the great work everyone!

OrganicAthlete: Why did you choose to stop eating animal products? When?

Interview with John Hirsch, Pro Triathlete

OrganicAthlete: How did you get into the sport of triathlon?

John Hirsch: I entered the sport of triathlon via cross-training for soccer, which I played in college. I suspect I would have found the sport anyways. I have a tons of energy, so it was either Ironman, some other sport or ritalin. I need that much motion daily or else I feel like the world no longer spins and the hands of time have stopped. If you are ADHD you know what I mean.

OA: How did you get into the vegan/vegetarian lifestyle?

Tri-Vegan Interview

This is an interview with Aaro Heinonen, one of the founders of a group called TriVegan.

OrganicAthlete: When and where TriVegan begin?

Aaro Heinonen: We started the group in Indianapolis in 1991.

OA: Why did the group form?

AH: My wife and I thought that it would give a bit of publicity to the fact that one need not eat meat to be a "serious" athlete.

OA: How many members does/did TriVegan have? What kinds of events did they participate in?

August Splash N' Dash

Last Tuesday was the monthly Splash N' Dash (750m swim + 3K run) and as usual I was a little late out the door.

The Saturday ride was good this weekend. The crew: Andy, Brett, Chris L, Chris P, myself, and the newbie Michael. The mission: cheer on our peeps in the Vineman triathlon, OA member Matt Ruscigno and his friend Brian.

Last time I saw Brian and Matt was at the World's Toughest Half Triathlon in Auburn, CA. They had done the Davis Double Century the day before. Whatever Matt and Brian do together ends epic.

Couples Triathlon

Media

Sunday I had my 2nd tri ever (the first being a sprint last october) and was excited about actually competing in the sport that I had been training specifically for the last few months.

It was acutally a couples tri, where you paired up with someone and your times and ages were added up for scores in group ( male- friends 40-55, couples married 80-95 etc. ) but all the people that I lined up to couple with ended up backing out so I ended up entering in the Individual Male group.
