Finally my first OA blog! My first big race as an OA member went well. A little over one year since I became vegan I finished my first Ironman! I met one OA member just before the start and a few other vegans during the race. I was amazed by all of the positive support I received from vegan fans in Madison. The OA uniform really stands out and I'm proud to wear it. Keep up the great work everyone!
OrganicAthlete: How did you get into the sport of triathlon?
John Hirsch: I entered the sport of triathlon via cross-training for soccer, which I played in college. I suspect I would have found the sport anyways. I have a tons of energy, so it was either Ironman, some other sport or ritalin. I need that much motion daily or else I feel like the world no longer spins and the hands of time have stopped. If you are ADHD you know what I mean.
OA: How did you get into the vegan/vegetarian lifestyle?
The Saturday ride was good this weekend. The crew: Andy, Brett, Chris L, Chris P, myself, and the newbie Michael. The mission: cheer on our peeps in the Vineman triathlon, OA member Matt Ruscigno and his friend Brian.
Last time I saw Brian and Matt was at the World's Toughest Half Triathlon in Auburn, CA. They had done the Davis Double Century the day before. Whatever Matt and Brian do together ends epic.
We're going to tri it! Join OrganicAthlete members in training for the San Francisco Triathlon on Treasure Island. There is the option to train for an Olympic distance (1.5k swim - 40k bike - 10k run) or Sprint distance (.5k swim - 20k bike - 5k run). This will be the first triathlon experience for some of us. So newbies and experts alike are welcome to join us in training for this event.

Sunday I had my 2nd tri ever (the first being a sprint last october) and was excited about actually competing in the sport that I had been training specifically for the last few months.
It was acutally a couples tri, where you paired up with someone and your times and ages were added up for scores in group ( male- friends 40-55, couples married 80-95 etc. ) but all the people that I lined up to couple with ended up backing out so I ended up entering in the Individual Male group.
