Tucson Bicycle Classic Race Report
Stage 1 was a 3+ mile TT that starts downhill and finishes with one longish hill, then a small steep hill up to the finish. I felt pretty fast out there with a full TT setup and sprinted by my 30 second man on the final climb. Posted a 7:50, good enough for 5th place.
Stage 2 was an 80 mile road race. The course was a rolling 20 mile loop and there was a good wind. There was a bonus sprint 4 miles into the race which I tried to go for but ended up 3rd. At the beginning of lap 2, P&S (the mexican team), launched a coordinated 3-man break in the crosswind. One other guy (Kyle Colavito) went with. The rest of the race was fairly negative with not many willing to chase the break. I tried to thin the group on the climbs, but the wind made it hard to drop people. At the end of the day we caught Kyle and one of the other breakaways. Carlos Hernandez and David Soloman finished :13 up on the group. Despite the results indicating I was in 4th, when all was said and done I slipped one place to 6th overall because of the bonus sprint.
Stage 3 was a 50 mile circuit race with a short, steep hill nine times. P&S had the jersey and shut everything down. In the finish I tried to get up there but could only muster 5th, which became 4th after Hernandez was relegated for yellow-line violation.
Ended up 6th GC. Wish I could have done better, but the courses didn't give much opportunity for a non-sprinter to improve.
