Are you afraid of Sasquatch?

I never thought I should be afraid of Sasquatch until today. Now I have good reason to be. Miguel Crawford emailed me earlier this week about riding Old Caz. "Game on," I like to say to such adventures.

Andy, Kevin, and I met at the shop per the usual 9am OrganicAthlete club Saturday ride in the thickest of fog. We met Miguel, Glen Fant, and Roger Bartels down the road. The fog broke on Green Valley Road, and we comfortably rode to Guerneville. I gave the paved climb up Old Caz a "threshold tickler." I could tell I'm at the end of a training block.

While chilling at the top before the descent, John Staroba and Tim Farnham caught up to us, making a group of 8. The descent was fun as usual, blasting down a wet, steep, dirt descent on a road bike. I even crashed once.

After topping our waterbottles in Cazadero, we cruised downstream toward the Russian River. I wasn't sure how Miguel planned on getting us home. "We'll take Sasquatch up from Duncan's Mills," he said. "Is that rideable on a road bike?" I asked. He smirked. Game on.

I'm paying for it now, and I don't know if Kevin will ever go riding with me again. Ha! Basically we climbed for 20 minutes at 30 rpm just to keep moving. But the views at the top were so worth it. I will be tackling this one again, even though sasquatch is not a legend, but a real beast to be feared.

Gate Hop'n, Stream Cross'n, Hill Climb'n Bliss

Every time I hop a locked rusty old gate and ride off into the forest I know I'm in for a real surprise. Crossing a creek with a road bike in arm has got to be in the class of "epic". I'll admit...I did consider riding through it.

I'm wondering what exactly I'm getting myself into every time I go riding with these guys now. It's usually a not so pleasant surprise, but a pleasant reward of a beautiful view and a feeling of pushing it to my limit and overcoming doubt weather some of this stuff is even possible on a road bike or if I've got enough left in my legs to make it home.

Paris-Roubaix ain't got nothin' on this. My drive train hates me though.
